Dysregulated Nervous System

Our nervous system influences our thoughts, behaviour, connection to others and how we experience the world.
The Vagus Nerve affects the parasympathetic nervous system. This can trigger a relaxation response in the body. The sympathetic side is the fight or flight response caused by stress. Chronic stress causes stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol to surge through our bodies. This causes damage to the body and mind and can cause problems like anxiety, chronic pain, gut inflammation and many more issues.
I continue on my healing journey to be grounded, self aware and responsible for my well being by having a more resilient nervous system.
The practices I have incorporated to help stimulate my Vagus Nerve are below. I practice a self soothing heart hold with affirmations on waking everyday. I also do this if I feel overwhelmed.
– Deep Breathing. Slow and deep exhale longer than you inhale.
– Meditation
– Cold Water Immersion. This also boosts the immune system and stimulates the intestines. This one has been a game changer for me.
– Yoga/Pilates
– Massage
– Supplements probiotics, fish oils and B vitamins. B vitamins play a key role in neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.
– Learning a New Skill
– Exercise
– Loud Gargling and Singing
– Eating Fibre
